The Story & Context — The Loom and the High Pass

The Story

What happens when you arrive

Ascending into the Beas River gorge, the mountain air sharpens as wooden handlooms in the Kullu Valley produce geometric wool shawls using centuries-old techniques. Across the valley, Manali reveals pagoda timber architecture at Hadimba Devi and quiet prayer halls.

Beneath the granite wall of the Dhauladhar Range, master craftsmen at the Norbulingka Institute grind mineral pigments for thangka scrolls and carve sacred temple lintels. The route winds through Dalhousie's cedar ridges before reaching the marble parikrama and communal hearth of the Golden Temple.

Cultural Context

Sacred Geometry and Himalayan Fibre

Himachal Pradesh sits at the crossroad of indigenous mountain devta traditions, Tibetan Buddhist lineages, and Sikh egalitarianism. Kullu’s wooden throw-shuttle looms reflect pastoral trade routes across high passes, while master studios at the Norbulingka Institute safeguard strict iconometric thangka painting disciplines outside Tibet.

Logistics & Permits

Field protocols & visas

Mobile coverage is steady in Shimla, Dharamshala and Amritsar, but intermittent on rural drives between Kangra craft villages and high ridge roads.
Shimla (~2,200m), Manali (~2,050m), Dharamshala (~1,450m–1,800m), and Dalhousie (~2,000m) experience pleasant daytime weather (15°C–25°C in summer, 10°C–18°C in autumn) with cool to cold nights (5°C–12°C). Layered clothing, including a warm fleece or jacket, is essential.
Mountain transfers involve winding roads through the Himalayan foothills; travellers susceptible to motion sickness should carry appropriate medication.
Pack comfortable, sturdy walking shoes for forest trails and studio floors, and slip-on sandals for temples and gurdwaras where shoes are frequently removed.
Meals feature regional North Indian cuisine, Himachali specialties (madra, siddu where available), and vegetarian options. The Golden Temple community kitchen (Langar) serves simple, wholesome vegetarian meals to all visitors without charge.

Protocols

Ethical guidelines

These are the conditions of travelling here. They are set at design, briefed before departure, and not negotiable on the ground.

When visiting Buddhist monasteries (Namgyal Monastery, Nyingmapa Monastery) and temples (Hadimba, Vashisht, Golden Temple), walk clockwise around shrines, prayer wheels, and stupas. Remove shoes before entering sanctums. Turn off phone ringers and maintain quiet voices.
The workshops at Norbulingka are active studios where master artists and apprentices work on sacred commissions. Watch respectfully without touching unfinished thangka canvases, woodcarvings, or metalwork. Always seek permission before photographing artists at work, and refrain from using flash.
Observe handloom operations from designated visitor areas. Avoid touching warp and weft threads on active looms.
At Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, head coverings are mandatory for all visitors (cloth bandanas provided at entry). Wash feet in the footbath before entering the parikrama. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main sanctum (Harmandir Sahib).
The cedar forests of Kufri, Manali, and Kalatop are fragile mountain habitats. Do not leave plastic packaging or food waste, and stay on designated walking trails.
