What happens when you arrive

Ascending into Munnar, cool mountain air settles over undulating tea fields planted in the nineteenth century, while endangered Nilgiri Tahr graze across shola grasslands below Anamudi. Further south, the Cardamom Hills yield black pepper and nutmeg along Periyar Lake.

Descending mountain passes, the landscape levels into the low-lying canals of Alleppey and Vembanad Lake, where country craft glide past sub-sea-level paddy fields. The journey concludes along the southern cliffs of Kovalam and the Dravidian stone gopuram of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple.

DAY 01

Arrival in Cochin and Ascent to Munnar

You arrive at Cochin International Airport or Ernakulam Railway Station, where your tour manager meets you. You board your private vehicle and begin the winding eastward ascent into the Western Ghats toward Munnar. En route, you pass through the foothills of the Sholayar ranges, catching views of the Periyar River and cascading roadside waterfalls like Cheeyappara and Valara. As the altitude rises, the air cools and the landscape shifts into expansive hillsides of tea estates. You arrive in Munnar, check in to your hotel, and spend the evening relaxing.

DAY 02

Munnar Tea Heritage and Eravikulam Ridge

After breakfast, you visit Eravikulam National Park, the high-altitude wildlife reserve established to protect the endangered Nilgiri Tahr. You walk along the park’s paved mountain path, scanning the grassy slopes and rocky crags for wild tahr grazing beneath the ridge of Anamudi Peak. Later, you visit the Munnar Tea Museum to see historic tea manufacturing machinery and learn about the estate heritage of the High Ranges. In the afternoon, you stop at the Rose Garden, Mattupetty Dam, and the scenic viewpoint at Echo Point. You spend the evening at leisure in Munnar town.

DAY 03

Munnar to the Spice Forests of Thekkady

Following breakfast, you check out and drive south along the ridge highway through the Cardamom Hills to Thekkady. En route, you stop at a working spice garden with a resident guide, walking along shaded footpaths to see how cardamom pods, black pepper vines, vanilla, cloves, and cinnamon bark are cultivated and harvested. Upon reaching Thekkady, you check in to your hotel. In the late afternoon, you visit the bustling hill-town market of Kumily to see freshly harvested spices, oils, and regional produce. You dine at your hotel in the evening.

DAY 04

Periyar Lake Boat Safari and Classical Kathakali

In the early morning, you enter Periyar National Park for a boat safari on Periyar Lake. As the boat glides across the reservoir, you observe the protected shoreline, looking for herds of wild elephants, Indian gaur, wild boars, and water birds among the submerged tree stumps. After returning for breakfast, you have free time to explore Kumily’s spice shops or walk around the town. In the evening, you attend a classical Kathakali performance, watching the actors apply layered paccha makeup before performing dramatic episodes from Hindu epics with expressive mudras.

DAY 05

Thekkady to the Alleppey Backwaters

After breakfast, you begin the descent from the Cardamom Hills down to the coastal lowlands of Alleppey. You arrive at the waterways of Vembanad Lake and check in to your hotel or traditional houseboat. In the afternoon, you embark on a backwater boat cruise along the palm-fringed canals. You drift past country canoes, duck farms, and rural waterside homesteads where daily life takes place along the banks, watching the sun set over open lake waters and green paddy fields. You spend the evening on the backwaters and dine on regional Keralan dishes.

DAY 06

Alleppey to Thiruvananthapuram via Jatayu

You check out after breakfast and drive south along the coastal highway toward Thiruvananthapuram. En route, you stop at Chadayamangalam to visit Jatayu Earth Centre, taking a scenic cable car ride to the hilltop summit to view the world’s largest bird sculpture, carved from stone atop the granite crag. After exploring the hilltop nature park, you continue southward to Thiruvananthapuram and the adjacent beach resort area of Kovalam. You check in to your hotel and spend the evening relaxing by the seaside.

DAY 07

Sree Padmanabhaswamy and the Kovalam Coast

After breakfast, you proceed on a city tour of Thiruvananthapuram. You visit the renowned Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, admiring its grand Dravidian gopuram and intricate stone pillar carvings from the temple courtyard. You then visit the Napier Museum, housing historic bronze idols and ivory carvings, and the Sree Chithra Art Gallery, showcasing classical Indian and Raja Ravi Varma paintings. In the late afternoon, you visit Kovalam Beach, strolling along the crescent shores of Hawa Beach and climbing the historic Vizhinjam Lighthouse for sweeping views of the Arabian Sea.

DAY 08

Departure from Thiruvananthapuram

You enjoy breakfast at your hotel before checking out. Depending on your flight or train schedule, you spend the morning at leisure on the beach or shopping for local spices and handicrafts in Thiruvananthapuram. Your tour manager arranges your private transfer to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport or Railway Station for your onward journey.

Munnar sits at approximately 1,600 metres elevation, where daytime temperatures average 18°C–24°C and night temperatures can drop to 10°C–14°C; bring warm layers. Thekkady is milder (16°C–26°C), while Alleppey, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kovalam are warm and humid (25°C–33°C).

Pack sturdy, comfortable walking shoes for national park trails and plantation walks, as well as easy slip-on sandals for temple visits where shoes must be deposited at entry.

Wildlife sightings in Periyar and Eravikulam depend on weather, season, and animal movement; sightings are never guaranteed, but the forest and lake landscapes are consistently scenic.

The Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple enforces strict traditional dress codes (dhoti for men, sarees or traditional long skirts for women; shirts must be removed by male visitors). Non-Hindus are permitted within the outer corridors but restricted from the inner sanctum. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the temple premises.

In Periyar National Park and Eravikulam National Park, remain quiet, stay on designated paths or boats, and never feed, approach, or provoke wild animals. Use of camera flashes around wildlife is prohibited.

When walking near tea gardens in Munnar or spice estates in Thekkady, respect estate workers at their jobs. Do not enter working picking rows without permission, and always ask before taking photographs of individuals.
