The Story & Context — Citadels of Stone and Silt

The Story

What happens when you arrive

Landing in Leh (3,500m), exploration opens along the Indus River corridor where royal chortens at Shey Palace and the twelve-storey complex of Thiksey Monastery overlook green barley fields. Hemis Monastery preserves sacred thangkas deep in a mountain fold beneath Stok Kangri.

Crossing the 5,359-metre Khardung La Pass into the Nubra Valley, cold desert dunes at Hunder shift beneath jagged peaks, leading to the apricot orchards and Balti stone lanes of Turtuk. The route traverses the Changthang plateau to the 134-kilometre saltwater expanse of Pangong Tso before returning across Chang La.

Cultural Context

The Silk Road Crossroads and Monastic Power

For centuries an independent Himalayan kingdom and Silk Road nexus, Ladakh's tiered monasteries served as spiritual seats and defensive fortresses against arid mountain passes. Along the northern frontier, Turtuk preserves distinct Balti heritage and stone-hewn apricot gravity canals.

Logistics & Permits

Field protocols & visas

Mobile connectivity (postpaid only) is available in Leh town but becomes highly intermittent or completely unavailable once crossing high passes into the Nubra Valley and around Pangong Tso.
Elevations range from 3,500m in Leh to over 5,300m at Khardung La and Chang La, and ~4,250m at Pangong Lake. Low oxygen levels require gradual acclimatisation, abundant water intake (3–4 liters daily), and avoidance of overexertion.
Summer days are warm and sunny (20°C–28°C), but high passes, Nubra nights, and Pangong Lake can drop to 0°C–5°C. Bring thermal base layers, a fleece jacket, windproof outer shell, warm hat, UV-protective sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen (intense UV radiation at altitude).
Trans-Himalayan mountain roads feature steep gradients, narrow switchbacks, and unpaved sections; travellers prone to motion sickness should carry appropriate medication.
Meals feature nourishing North Indian, Tibetan (thukpa, momos), and Ladakhi dishes, with vegetarian and non-vegetarian selections.

Protocols

Ethical guidelines

These are the conditions of travelling here. They are set at design, briefed before departure, and not negotiable on the ground.

Day 1 in Leh is strictly reserved for rest and hydration. Do not schedule strenuous physical activity, walking tours, or alcohol consumption during the first 24 hours. Report any persistent headache, nausea, or dizziness to your Tour Manager immediately.
When visiting monasteries (Thiksey, Hemis, Diskit), walk clockwise around shrines, stupas, and prayer wheels. Remove shoes and hats before entering prayer halls. Never touch ancient wall paintings, wooden altars, or statues. Strictly obey photography prohibitions in inner sanctums and during monastic prayers.
Turtuk is a traditional residential village. Dress modestly (covering shoulders and knees), respect the privacy of local family homes, and always ask permission before taking photographs of residents.
Ladakh’s high desert and Pangong Lake are fragile ecosystems with limited water and no municipal waste processing. Do not purchase single-use plastic bottles; refill from filtered stations. Carry all non-biodegradable trash back to Leh.
In Hunder Sand Dunes, Bactrian camel rides are excluded from the tour package on ethical grounds; travellers are encouraged to observe these rare animals from a respectful distance without commercial handling.
