Ascending into Western Arunachal Pradesh, the road climbs through the Kameng River gorge and crosses the snow-clad 4,170-metre Sela Pass to Tawang. Perched on a mountain ridge, the 400-year-old Tawang Monastery preserves ancient thangkas and monastic libraries near the northern frontier.

DAY 01

Arrival in Guwahati and Drive to Kaziranga National Park

You arrive at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport or Guwahati Railway Station, where your tour manager greets you. You board your private vehicle and drive eastward across the fertile Brahmaputra valley through tea gardens and rural Assamese villages to Kaziranga National Park. You check in to your wilderness resort and spend a relaxing evening amidst the sounds of the surrounding forest. You dine at the resort.

DAY 02

Kaziranga 4x4 Wildlife Safari and Orchid Biodiversity Park

You wake early for an open 4x4 jeep safari into the grasslands and water bodies of Kaziranga National Park. Accompanied by an authorized forest guide, you search for the Great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros, wild water buffalo, swamp deer, and herds of wild elephants. After returning for breakfast, you visit the Kaziranga Orchid and Biodiversity Park to explore its extensive collection of indigenous northeastern orchids, medicinal plants, and cultural exhibits. You dine at the resort.

DAY 03

Kaziranga to Dirang Valley via Bhalukpong

Following breakfast, you check out and cross the Brahmaputra River, entering the state of Arunachal Pradesh at Bhalukpong after permit verification. You ascend the scenic gorge of the Kameng River into the cool temperate valley of Dirang (1,560m). You check in to your hotel and visit the historic stone Dirang Dzong (fort) and Dirang Monastery overlooking the valley. In the evening, you stroll through the quiet mountain hamlet and dine at your hotel.

DAY 04

Dirang to Tawang via Sela Pass (13,700 ft) and Jaswant Garh

After breakfast, you begin the spectacular high-altitude ascent to Tawang. You cross the snow-clad heights of Sela Pass at 4,170 metres (13,700 feet), stopping to admire the frozen alpine beauty of Sela Lake and prayer flags against the sky. You visit the Jaswant Garh War Memorial to pay tribute to the 1962 war hero Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat, and stop at the roaring Nuranang Waterfall (Bong Bong Falls). In the late afternoon, you arrive in Tawang (3,048m), check in to your hotel, and dine in the evening.

DAY 05

Tawang Monastery, Madhuri Lake and Bum La Pass

You spend the morning exploring the monumental Tawang Monastery (Galden Namgey Lhatse), the 400-year-old spiritual citadel of the Gelugpa lineage. You walk through the grand assembly hall, library, and museum containing centuries-old Buddhist scriptures. Later, you set out on an excursion to the high-altitude glacial waters of Sangetsar Lake (Madhuri Lake) and the frontier crest of Bum La Pass at 4,630 metres (high-altitude) along the Indo-China border (subject to military permits). In the evening, you attend the Light & Sound show at the Tawang War Memorial and dine at your hotel.

DAY 06

Tawang to Bomdila Monasteries and Craft Centres

Following breakfast, you check out and begin your return drive southward over the mountain ridges to Bomdila (2,415m). Upon arrival, you check in to your hotel and visit the Bomdila Monastery (Gentse Gaden Rabgyel Lling Monastery), the Upper Gompa, and local craft centers showcasing traditional Monpa woodcarvings, thangkas, and woven textiles. You explore the local market in the evening and dine at your hotel.

DAY 07

Bomdila to Guwahati via Kamakhya Foothills

After breakfast, you descend the winding mountain roads of Arunachal Pradesh, crossing back into the plains of Assam. You drive southwest to Guwahati and check in to your hotel. In the late afternoon, you take an orientation drive past the Nilachal Hills to visit the sacred foothill precinct of Kamakhya Temple (Mukh Darshan). You gather for a farewell dinner at your hotel.

DAY 08

Guwahati Departure

Following breakfast, you check out from your hotel. Your tour manager arranges your private transfer to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport or Guwahati Railway Station for your onward journey.

Mobile signal is available in foothill hubs (Guwahati, Tezpur, Dirang) but becomes highly intermittent or absent across the Sela Pass (4,170m) and in remote sections of western Arunachal Pradesh.

Elevations rise rapidly from 100m in Guwahati to 3,048m in Tawang, 4,170m (13,700 ft) at Sela Pass, and 4,630m (high-altitude) at Bum La Pass. Temperatures at high passes can drop below freezing even in autumn and spring. Bring thermal innerwear, a heavy down jacket, windproof outer shell, warm woollen hat, thermal gloves, and high-SPF lip balm.

Pack sturdy waterproof mountain boots with deep tread for rocky pass paths and stepped monastery courtyards, alongside slip-on sandals for temple interiors.

Mountain roads across Arunachal Pradesh are narrow and subject to military convoys and weather delays. Vehicles are heavy-duty 4x4s/SUVs.

Meals feature regional Assamese and Monpa cuisine (khar, tenga, thukpa, zan, momos, local butter tea) alongside standard North Indian fare.

These are the conditions of travelling here. They are set at design, briefed before departure, and not negotiable on the ground.

In all monasteries (Tawang, Dirang, Bomdila), remove shoes and headwear before entering prayer halls. Walk clockwise around all stupas, prayer wheels, and shrines. Never touch sacred wall frescoes or religious relics, and maintain silence during prayers.

Maintain complete silence in safari vehicles. Do not stand up, yell, or use flash photography when viewing wild rhinoceroses or elephants. Stay strictly within authorized vehicle tracks.

Commercial elephant riding in Kaziranga is excluded from tour inclusions under Foxpels Design Constraint 1 (no elephant riding); safaris are conducted strictly via open 4x4 safari vehicles.

Sela Pass and Sangetsar Lake are fragile alpine environments. Pack out all non-biodegradable waste; do not discard plastic bottles or wrappers in high-altitude zones.

Bum La Pass and military memorial sites are sensitive frontier zones. Strictly follow all security instructions and photography guidelines issued by the Indian Army.
