What happens when you arrive

Ascending the Teesta River gorge into Sikkim, the journey visits the high glacial basin of Tsomgo Lake (3,780m) and the ancient Buddhist iconography at the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology.

Traveling west to Pelling, the seventeenth-century Pemayangtse Monastery faces the snow-crested wall of Mount Kanchenjunga. Crossing into West Bengal, pre-dawn views from Tiger Hill reveal Kanchenjunga turning gold above high-grown orthodox tea estates.

DAY 01

Arrival at Bagdogra / NJP and Mountain Drive to Gangtok

You arrive at Bagdogra Airport or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station, where your tour manager greets you. You board your private mountain vehicle and ascend the scenic valley of the Teesta River, passing sub-tropical forests and suspension bridges into the hills of Sikkim. You arrive in Gangtok (1,650m), check in to your hotel, and spend the evening taking an orientation stroll along the pedestrian promenade of MG Marg. You dine at your hotel.

DAY 02

High-Altitude Tsomgo Lake (12,400 ft) and Baba Mandir

After breakfast, you embark on a mountain excursion to the sacred glacial waters of Tsomgo Lake, situated at an altitude of 3,780 metres (12,400 feet). You walk along the lake shore, taking in views of the alpine basin and prayer flags fluttering against bare mountain slopes. You continue to Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir, an active shrine maintained by the Indian Army. You return to Gangtok in the late afternoon for dinner at your hotel.

DAY 03

Gangtok Monasteries to Pelling Ridge

Following breakfast, you visit the 19th-century Enchey Monastery, perched on a forested ridge above Gangtok, and explore the vast collection of Buddhist thangkas, manuscripts, and statues at the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology. You stop at Banjhakri Waterfalls before beginning the scenic mountain drive westward across the valleys of Sikkim to Pelling (2,150m). You check in to your hotel and enjoy evening sunset views of the Kanchenjunga range. You dine at your hotel.

DAY 04

Pelling Skywalk, Pemayangtse Monastery and Waterfalls

After breakfast, you explore the sacred sites of West Sikkim. You visit the Pelling Skywalk, walking along the elevated glass walkway beneath the massive golden statue of Chenrezig with panoramic views of the Himalayas. You continue to Pemayangtse Monastery, the historic royal gompa founded in 1705, admiring its antique wall paintings and the masterfully carved wooden model of Guru Rinpoche’s celestial palace. In the afternoon, you visit Rimbi Falls and Kanchenjunga Falls before returning to Pelling for dinner.

DAY 05

Pelling to Darjeeling (Queen of the Hills)

Following breakfast, you check out and drive south across the Rangit River valley, ascending into the tea-covered hills of West Bengal to Darjeeling (2,045m). You check in to your hotel and spend the afternoon at leisure, exploring Chowrasta (the Mall), browsing heritage bookshops, or relaxing at a colonial mountain café overlooking the valley. You dine at your hotel.

DAY 06

Tiger Hill Sunrise, Ghoom Monastery and Tea Estates

You wake before dawn and drive to Tiger Hill (2,590m) to witness the sunrise over Mount Kanchenjunga, watching the snow peaks turn from silver to deep amber. On your return, you visit Ghoom Monastery (Yiga Choeling), home to a 15-foot statue of Maitreya Buddha, and the iconic railway spiral of Batasia Loop. After breakfast, you visit the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), the Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre, and a high-grown tea estate to learn about orthodox tea processing. You dine at your hotel.

DAY 07

Darjeeling to Bagdogra / NJP and Departure

Following breakfast, you check out from your hotel and board your private vehicle for the scenic descent through pine forests and tea gardens to the plains. Your tour manager arranges your drop-off at Bagdogra Airport or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station for your onward journey.

Mobile connectivity is available in major hill stations (Gangtok, Darjeeling, Pelling) but is intermittent during mountain valley transit and at higher elevations in West Sikkim.

Sikkim requires an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for all visitors, plus Protected Area Permits (PAP) for specific high-altitude monastery zones in West and North Sikkim. Foxpels obtains all required permits on your behalf prior to departure.

Elevations range from 2,000m in Darjeeling and Gangtok to over 3,780m (12,400 ft) at Tsomgo Lake. High-altitude excursions can be cold and windy; bring thermal base layers, a fleece jacket, windproof outer shell, warm hat, and gloves.

Pack sturdy walking shoes with good traction for stepped monastery paths and tea estate trails, alongside slip-on sandals for temple interiors.

In all Buddhist monasteries (Pemayangtse, Enchey, Ghoom), remove shoes and hats before entering assembly halls (*dukhang*). Walk clockwise around prayer wheels, chortens, and shrines. Never touch sacred wall murals or statues, and maintain silence during prayers.

Tsomgo Lake is a sacred water body and a fragile high-altitude wetland. Do not discard plastic packaging, food wrappers, or synthetic items into the lake or surrounding terrain.

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park in Darjeeling is screened out from tour inclusions under Foxpels Design Constraint 2 (no captive animal displays); travellers are encouraged to explore natural tea garden walks and Himalayan viewpoints instead.
